What distance should I have the fireguard from the fire?

No official regulations exist on what the distance should be from a stove or open fire in the United Kingdom and many of the stove manufacturers give individual instructions depending on the brand or model. We recommend thinking about the distance to the fire carefully. The baby fireguard should firstly not be close enough to the stove or fire that your child can reach through the vertical bars and touch the fire or stove from any side. Usually above 40cm is too far for a baby up to 2 years of ages to reach through.

Furthermore, as fireguards are metal in construction, you should consider the possibility of the fireguard becoming too hot on every panel both front and sides. Each fire/stove is different and the temperature from home to home can vary depending on the power of the stove and the strength of the fire as well as the length of time the fire guard is exposed to heat. As a precautionary measure in our instruction manual, we mention the distance from a stove should be 75cm, and the distance from an open fire should be 90cm. However, in many cases, this distance is not needed and is not even possible due to space limitations and in some situations, more 75cm is required! It is the responsibility of the user to check the fire guard both initially and regularly to make sure the gate is not overheating. If you discover that your fireguard is becoming too hot stop using it immediately and look at extensions from Babasafe to increase the distance.

Many parents do not use their fire at all and simply wish to protect from the sharp and hard corners of the hearth and fireplace and stove. Furthermore, the fireplace area can be a dusty and dirty area and parents may wish to simply block this area off. If this is the case, you may find that going for the closest size possible is fine provided the fire is not lit.

Can I fit the brackets at the side of a chimney breast?

Yes, our brackets can be fit at any angle and rotate around the last vertical bar on the gate panel so will fit on the side of a chimney breast or even slanted or angled walls.

Will the brackets fit around skirting board?

The brackets are designed to skip out the skirting and are 5cm deep so should cover the thickness of most skirting boards in the UK.

Can I use the fireguard outdoors?

Yes but if being left outside the user needs to provide rust proof treatment.

What if I choose the wrong size?

If you choose the wrong size we will guide you on the best option whether that be to replace some panels or purchase extra panels to get a better fit. If you wish to return the guard you can do so, but the gate must be in a saleable condition please see our returns page for full details.

Is the fireguard rigid?

Yes once in place, the panels will lock at the shape you choose and the guard will be fitted to the wall. The fireguard is designed to withstand pressure without losing its shape.

What age is children the fireguard suitable for?

The Babasafe Multifit fireguard is designed for children up to 2 years. Please be aware that all child safety products can be defeated by your child eventually at any age. Be vigilant at all times and if you find your child is capable of climbing or opening the guard discontinue use immediately.
